As an independent Crown entity, we enforce laws relating to competition, fair trading, and consumer credit contracts.About the Role:This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Fair Trading and Product Safety Investigations team within the Commission's Competition, Fair Trading, and Credit branch. Reporting to the General Manager, this role offers the chance to oversee a dedicated team of investigators working on up to 60 cases at a time, including high-profile consumer protection issues that impact consumers and businesses every day. Your branch is responsible for the core enforcement and compliance work for the Commission and your leadership role includes working closely with leaders across the branch.As the Head of Fair Trading and Product Safety Investigations, you will provide strategic and operational leadership, guiding your high performing team to deliver consumer-focused outcomes while ensuring compliance with the Fair Trading Act and relevant legislation. With the potential for legislative changes, this role also provides a unique opportunity to shape New Zealand's consumer protection landscape.Additionally, you will:Strategically lead a team of five direct reports, overseeing a portfolio based approach to investigations, while encouraging cross collaboration between their teams and across the Commission.Provide advice and input to our Board and other parts of the Commission on consumer issues and intersections with the Fair Trading Act.Collaborate with internal and external legal teams to ensure high-quality case outcomes.Build strong relationships with stakeholders such as Consumer NZ and international agencies like the ACCC (Australian equivalent).Ensure consistency in investigative practices and high-quality advice, while seeking opportunities to continuously lead change and improvement.Navigate potential legislative reforms, including the Commerce Act, Fair Trading Act and other consumer regulatory changes.About you:To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced leader, possibly with a legal background, ideally from within consumer protection or regulatory investigations. You will have a proven track record of managing diverse, high-performing teams and delivering impactful outcomes. Your ability to work with senior leadership, Board executives, legal teams, and key external stakeholders including Ministers will be critical to your success in this role.What We're Looking For:Proven leadership experience in investigations, consumer protection, or regulatory law.Ability to manage a diverse, high-paced dedicated team while maintaining high standards.Expertise in building high performing, engaged teams, and establishing robust stakeholder relationships with a diverse audience, including legal and senior executive teams.Experience navigating complex legislative environments, influencing policy outcomes and making pragmatic prioritisation decisions.Passion for delivering consumer-focused results and improving market fairness.This role offers the chance to lead critical investigations that protect New Zealanders, influence outcomes for consumers and businesses, and collaborate with international counterparts.
