Upper Hutt, New Zealand Upper Hutt City Council Full time

Updated 24 October 2024:
We are reminding everyone that the Maoribank Boardwalk Track remains closed to the public as more slips are likely, and the track remains unsafe for public use.

The affected area sits on private land and until a full assessment is completed, and an agreement with the landowner has been made, the path will remain closed.

Applications closing on 24 November 2024, 02:00 PM

Following a recent restructure, we have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced Principal Advisor Operations to join our team.

The Operations Group is a diverse group responsible for the efficient and effective management of Council's infrastructure services (land transport services, three waters, asset management, sustainability, and waste management) and delivery of a range of compliance and consenting services - including technical policy support, advice, land use and building consents, so that the growth aspirations of council and the community can be satisfied. This multi-disciplinary group also has responsibility for our organisational customer services and city-wide emergency management functions.

This is a key role within the Operations Group, reporting to the Group Manager, where you will get the opportunity to help shape the future of infrastructure and service delivery for the Upper Hutt community.

Working with the Group Manager, manager peers, and subject matter experts across the group's diverse activities, the Principal Advisor will provide both high-level technical advice and practical support to operational delivery of the group's diverse activities.

This ranges from supporting strategic planning and budget setting, monitoring of programme delivery and key performance indicators, projects, health and safety outcomes, and customer service responses, to maintaining a culture of continuous improvement within the Operations Group. This role is also responsible for providing advice on and support to developing policies, strategies, and bylaws relevant to the group's activities.

Key skills we are looking for include:

  • At least 5 years' experience in a relevant role or ready to move into a Principal role
  • Strong project and/or programme management abilities
  • Exceptional organisational skills and the ability to coordinate diverse functions and activities to achieve objectives
  • A flexible 'hands-on' approach to undertaking a wide range of work that may be required in connection with the Operations Group portfolio
  • Experience producing and implementing evidence-based strategies, plans, policies, and reports, which are written in 'easy read' content
  • Excellent relationship building, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Evidenced analytical and critical reasoning skills
  • Experience in central or local government organisations would be an advantage
  • Involvement in local government consultation and engagement is desirable

This role will appeal to highly motivated candidates with a drive for success and an appetite for a diverse portfolio, with exceptional coordination and collaboration skills to work across the wider team ability to get things done.

This is a unique opportunity to join Upper Hutt City Council and contribute to delivering great outcomes for the community. Working with the Upper Hutt City Council is a rewarding way to support the community, work with a great team, and develop your career. We do more than just pay you a salary; we have a range of great benefits to support you.

With 50% of the Wellington region's green space, boutique shopping, award-winning Brewtown, and quirky cafes all within walking distance, train station close by, and free parking, Upper Hutt is a great choice for your next career move.

All applications must include a cover letter, CV, and a completed online Upper Hutt City Council application form.

Applications close 4pm 24 November 2024.
NOTE THAT YOU MUST HAVE THE RIGHT TO WORK IN NEW ZEALAND TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE.
