**Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role**

The Lead Advisor provides support to children and young people to access an education that meets their needs and supports the re-engagement of children and young people in their learning pathway. You will provide advice and guidance to ākonga and their whānau, to broker support with schools, service providers, and community agencies.

You will use data, and your local knowledge and relationships, to identify priorities and influence change to maximise education outcomes for ākonga.

Young people at risk of not achieving need innovative education solutions that meet their learning needs. This role requires close working relationships and an understanding of education, including alternative education, activity centres, attendance services, and local tailor-made services to develop a learning pathway that is sustainable for the most challenging students.

**Mōhou ake | About you**

This is a broad student-focused role but is targeted mainly at children and young people who have become disconnected from education and getting them reconnected as quickly as possible. To achieve this, the Lead Advisor has to be able to access relevant databases quickly and efficiently, and work with a range of people, both inside and outside the Ministry.

The successful applicant will have to demonstrate that they can quickly establish strong relationships of purpose and high credibility with the education sector, alongside other government departments and NGOs to get the job done.

To be successful you will need:

- A sound understanding of the New Zealand education system and relevant legislation and applicable criteria;
- Knowledge and experience working with schools and communities to re-engage ākonga in education;
- Ability to work in complex situations:

- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver quality work on time;
- Ability to develop networks to support ākonga and whānau
- Understanding of the Attendance Service and the important role they play;
- A full driver licence.

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

Te Mahau takiwā collectively provide leadership and integrated services to the education sector.

Te Mahau | Te Tai Whenua is a takiwā group consisting of four regions:

- Waikato
- Bay of Plenty, Waiariki
- Hawke's Bay, Tairāwhiti
- Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatū

Across our takiwā, we provide leadership and guidance to deliver education service for school/kura, early learning services, whānau and ākonga, and our local communities.

We also collectively strengthen relationships with our diverse communities who support Māori, Pacific peoples, ākonga with learning support needs, and ākonga from disadvantaged backgrounds.
