Tamaki, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

**Kotahi anō te kaupapa**: ko te oranga o te iwi (There is only one purpose to our work: the wellness and wellbeing of people)
Hōkai Rangi is Ara Poutama Aotearoa's organisational strategy. A key focus of Hōkai Rangi is the humanising and healing of the people in our care. Ara Poutama Aotearoa staff focus on having relationships with the people in our care, and their whānau, based on manaaki and contribute positively to their wellbeing. This includes supporting individuals to desist from offending and to develop new life paths that further aid their future wellbeing, and that of their whanau.
Mō te tūnga | About the role
We are looking for an experienced Registered Psychologist to join our passionate and supportive team in Auckland's North Shore office on the grounds of Auckland Prison. Ara Poutama Aotearoa Psychological Services is expert in the provision of specialist assessment and rehabilitation aimed at individual, whanāu and community safety; this new and unique role brings a specific focus to supporting individuals within a dedicated purpose-driven service area at Auckland Prison.
With the formation of the Persons of Extreme Risk Directorate (PERD) in late 2019, a strengthened operating model was put in place to enhance the management and care of a small number of people in prison and in the community. This can be due to their ongoing risk of serious violence, or their capability to influence others to engage in behaviour that causes serious harm to others. As part of the enhancement of our direct management of these individuals, and to provide support to the wider Corrections estate, we have established this new psychology position and we need your expertise
The PERD operating model brings together a small team with the right skills and experience to manage those individuals who may present safety and security challenges that cannot be mitigated with a mainstream management approach. PERD provides strategic and operational oversight and guidance in relation to these individuals across the prison estate and in the community and supports effective decision making in relation to how they are managed by Corrections. PERD also oversees the direct management of a small number of individuals in the Prisoners of Extreme Risk Unit (PERU), which is designed with controlled spaces and technology for safe engagement.
In this role you will work directly with the individuals in the PERU and those that PERD provides support to across the country. You will use your relevant expertise to provide the assessment and/or treatment of the men in the PERU and consult with the wider PERD and PERU teams, and other Corrections staff and stakeholders. Alongside the support of the local psychology team and national psychology advisor, you will report to the onsite Manager Psychological Services and have access to tailored supervision, including cultural supervision and advice.
Depending on applicants' preferences and expertise, this role can be arranged as a job-share position which may be suited to someone seeking a part-time role, or that includes Corrections based psychology work outside the service delivery to PERD and PERU. As the PERU includes technology for remote e-sessions, there is an option of being based elsewhere in the country, alongside travel to Auckland Prison.
We are looking for senior registered psychologists (in the clinical/counselling, forensics or general scopes of practice) who:

- Are passionate about psychology and committed to best practice approaches
- Have expertise in extremism related clinical practice or is enabled to achieve that
- Have expertise or knowledge in working in the area of Transnational Organised Crime
- Have a strength for mental health and behavioural formulations and experience working with a range of mental health and health diagnoses
- Have excellent problem solving and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Have experience working with a range of key justice sector stakeholders both within and external to the Department.
- Ideally experience in writing psychological reports to the Court and/or the Parole Board including expert witness testimonial.
- Work at a high level in a collaborative, professional and information sensitive environment
- Are reliable, flexible, adaptable and resilient
- Have a commitment to Te Ao Māori/Tikanga Māori, bi-cultural practices, and contributing to the outcomes of Hōkai Rangi
- Have a minimum of a Masters degree in Psychology
- Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining the appropriate level of security clearance through the NZSIS vetting process.

Please note that applicants must hold registration with the New Zealand Psychologists Board and will be required to complete a full disclosure criminal history check and pre-employment drug tests.
