About the role | Mō te tūnga
Offender Employment (OE) is all about giving the people in our care the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release. Now is an exciting time to join us as an Instructor at Auckland Prison.
This position focuses on giving the people in our care basic skills in various trades offered through employment within the prison. The role also provides support to the wider Offender Employment operation covering a variety of industries; you could be in the Joinery workshop one day teaching Carpentry or Joinery to working in the Laundry or Engineering Workshops the next. We are looking for a person who can cope with change, is adaptable to dynamic work environments, and can be part of a team developing a pathway from training classroom to a live workshop environment.
Due to this working environment we require applicants to have either a Carpentry or Joinery qualification; NQZA Training & Assessing Unit Standards will be obtained during your time in the role. Experience in Welding and fabrication would be an advantage.

We are looking for someone who has experience in Building/Carpentry who holds a relevant trade qualification. We are looking for applicants who have experience in training and are passionate about helping the people in our care make positive changes. You will take pride in your work and be safety conscious and be able to pass this onto the people in our care.
- A proven passion and experience in the construction industry with a focus in Building and Joinery/or Carpentry
- Experience and ability to train people in Building and Joinery/or Carpentry skills
- Relevant trade qualifications
- A current Building Practitioner License (LBP)
- Outstanding Health and Safety practices
- Exceptional people, communication & organisational skills
- The ability to motivate and harness the talents of people within a team environment.
- Ideally experienced as an adult educator
- Ability to develop effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- A full New Zealand Driver's License
A comprehensive induction and initial basic training course are provided for the successful applicant. This will involve 11 weeks residential training at our college just outside of Wellington to focus on the custodial elements of our position.
Experience as an adult educator, NZQA Assessor (4098), and/or experience at BCITO is an advantage.
The hours of work will be Monday to Friday 40 hours/week.
Pay and salary
The salary range for this role is $62,014 - $77,341.
