Toitū te marae a Tāne-Mahuta, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata
If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive
Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by:
- protecting land, species, ecosystems, and cultural heritage for conservation purposes
- managing threats and adverse impacts
- being a voice for conservation
- connecting people to nature.
Te Papa Atawhai wants to help visitors connect with New Zealand's natural, cultural, and historic resources, have them protect these resources and enable tangata whenua and communities to thrive.
The Heritage and Visitors Unit is responsible for the Department's systems and investment strategy for all visitor experiences and historic heritage programmes.
He angitūtanga | About the role
Our team is responsible for and manages the development and delivery of the Department's recreation products (such as the Great Walks and Short Walks/Day Hikes), including service and product design and operational policy, to create great visitor experiences.
To maintain the right mix of sustainable visitor experiences, we're investing in capability and re-orientating our systems to ensure they are progressive and future focused. To enhance visitor experience, we're changing how we work and taking a more strategic approach to product portfolios, service design and delivery improvement.
As Principal Product Management Advisor you will take a lead role in product management, helping us develop and implement product strategy to meet visitor needs and the Department's strategic objectives. You'll work in collaboration with teams across the Department, and other stakeholders to support product development and delivery, leveraging their experience and knowledge to develop products that engage visitors and work on the ground.
You will help build and embed the Department's visitor product management function, working with others to develop tools and processes to support efficient, consistent delivery of visitor products.
Drawing on your expertise and that of others, you'll review our products, system levers and processes to make data driven recommendations on how we can better deliver the Department's customer products. You will consider existing standards and policies to identify areas for improvement, reviewing existing products and creating concepts for new products to support delivery of the Department's visitor experiences.
Mōu | About you
You will have a proven track record of product management and product development with a strong operational component, ideally gained in tourism or recreation environments.
An influential and persuasive communicator, you'll take people on the journey with you, and recognise the importance of working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure our work is culturally responsive and reflects the Department's conservation values.
You'll be seen as a credible lead on product delivery, and your opinion will be sought by your colleagues.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
- a track record of delivery excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement
- at least five years' experience working in a product management role or significant experience in a conservation visitor context with strong transferable skills
- advanced conceptual and analytical skills in product development, strategy, and management
- demonstrated ability to lead complex projects, including planning, commissioning work, and integrating thinking to create clear, impactful outputs that can be implemented
- relationship management skills to lead projects requiring the input and buy-in of teams across DOC and externally, including a track record of working with senior leaders
- demonstrated experience of delivering projects
- an understanding of Te Ao Māori values and knowledge, and experience partnering with iwi on complex issues.
The Department is committed to building a workplace where our differences are recognised, respected, and embraced. Our organisation's success is dependent on our people feeling valued for their differences, empowered to contribute, and respected for what they bring to their role.
We also offer flexible working as standard, so if you are looking for a role that will give you professional challenge, whilst maintaining a work-life balance, this could be the role for you.
Be part of change and help contribute to Aotearoa's conservation legacy.
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you?
