New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Mō tēnei tūrangi mahi | About this role
Aotearoa New Zealand and the world are waking up to the problems being created by our current approach to managing waste. The Ministry for the Environment - Manatū Mō Te Taiao is responsible for leading the Government's work in this challenging area, which has major implications for our environment, economy and how we live our lives.
Waste is one of the greatest challenges of our time. We use too much, waste too much and pollute too much - and this has negative impacts on the environment. It means there will be fewer resources available to future generations. Aotearoa New Zealand is one of the highest generators of waste per person in the world, and the amount of waste we create is increasing. New Zealanders want to do better. Come and join the challenge.
The Waste and Resource Efficiency section of the Ministry is expanding to meet this challenge through an ambitious and cutting-edge work programme. We are looking for multiple experienced senior policy practitioners, to take on a Senior Policy Analyst - Waste Legislation opportunity to support the delivery of the WMA review project. We are also seeking a Policy Analyst to contribute to our meaningful mahi. These are permanent positions, based anywhere in NZ.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- Experience in policy development and implementation
- Experience working with technical evidence and data to inform policy
- Experience in central or local government preferable (but not essential)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong project management, coordination and organisational skills
- Ability to work in a fast paced and sometimes ambiguous environment
- High interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Keenness to bring Te Ao Māori, Mātauranga and Te Tiriti into your work everyday.

**In addition, for Senior Policy Analysts**:
We are seeking seniors who are ready to get stuck in and utilise their sound policy background, to be change agents for the waste sector. These roles are not for the faint hearted - we have a big challenge ahead and those energised and committed will be successful and valued contributors in our team. As a senior member of our team, you will confidently guide and mentor others and feel comfortable acting on behalf of the Ministry, leading external and internal stakeholder relationships.
- Experience providing policy advice to senior leaders and Ministers, especially in the absence of full information
- An understanding of waste management issues and the waste sector
- Exposure to regional council policy or central government legislation
- Ability to use your strategic/systems thinking experience to weave together knowledge systems and fill critical gaps in science, research, and data
- We expect applicants to be able to demonstrate several years' experience in policy development and implementation
- Ability to act on behalf of the Ministry, leading external relationships and managing contracts
- Ability to navigate and balance individual views to find consensus
- Confidence to guide and mentor others.
