Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Do you want to use your analytical skills and abilities in mātauranga Māori, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori to help make a meaningful change in the lives of mokopuna across Aotearoa?

Mō mātou / About us
The Office of the Children's Commissioner (OCC) is an independent crown entity advocating for the interests, rights and wellbeing of mokopuna (the OCC refer to children and young people as mokopuna). Te moemoeā: kia kuru pounamu te rongo; our vision is that all children and young people of Aotearoa live their best lives and feel treasured.
We recognise that an important part of achieving this vision is working towards a society in which Te Tiriti o Waitangi is fully realised. For us, that starts within our tari - we are on an exciting journey to becoming a truly te tiriti based organisation.
Although we have started our journey of change, it is a big job, so we have established our Mata Māori team to act as the kaitiaki of mātauranga Māori for the tari. This team will ensure that managers and kaimahi are guided in operationalising Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all that we do.
Mō te tūnga / About the role
As the Senior Advisor Māori, you will work closely with our Pou Whakahaere and Principal Advisor Māori to deliver on a work programme which shifts us to becoming a tari that operates with mātauranga Māori and our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi at our core.
You will provide mātauranga Māori advice and guidance across the tari, particularly in working with our Kairaranga Mokopuna and Whānau to establish systems and processes that support our operational teams to function in a way that is in line with tikanga Māori and from a te ao Māori perspective. This role will also take a coaching and mentoring position with regard to their team's work programme and in supporting kaimahi across the tari.
You will operate at a senior level across all key accountabilities and will have responsibility for managing complex pieces of work autonomously. You will provide an analytical lens from a te ao Māori perspective across all mahi undertaken by the tari, working to embed mātauranga Māori within all that we do.
Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu / What you will bring
You may be an academic looking to explore a new role, or you may even have a background in policy or law. Regardless of your speciality, in order to be successful in this role you will need to be fluent in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and have an ability to build relationships and engage with people in a way that fosters change.
- Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Have experience in leading and managing projects or big pieces of work.
- Strong critical and strategic thinking skills and the ability to be politically savvy.
- Strong analytical skills and a proven ability to synthesise information, draw conclusions and make clear recommendations.
- Experience in engaging with tamariki, rangatahi and in whānau rights, interests and wellbeing would be beneficial in this role

Above all else, you will have a strong commitment to influencing systemic change so that the mokopuna of Aotearoa, and particularly mokopuna Maori, can live their best lives - kia kuru pounamu te rongo.
Ngä hua ka puta i te mahi ki OCC / What we can offer you
- A hybrid working model - some days working in the tari and some working from home
- 4 weeks annual leave plus at least 3 additional paid leave days each year
- Working in a whānau friendly environment - we love having mokopuna in the tari
- Option for flexible working arrangements - flexible start and finish times, shorter hours and other arrangements can all be considered
- Working with a team of passionate kaimahi who truly care about achieving the best outcomes for all mokopuna of Aotearoa

Me pēhea te tuku tono / How to apply
You can find a position description for the role on our website. Applicants for this position should have the legal right to work in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Applications close 5pm, Wednesday 1 March 2023.
