Our Environmental Services department is looking for an experienced ecologist to join our Specialist Advice team. Our department is committed to preserving and enhancing the natural environment of Auckland with the Specialist Advice team dedicated to providing expert guidance and support to protect our region's indigenous species and ecosystems.

This is a great opportunity to be part of an exciting programme of work which will improve Auckland’s precious natural environment for current and future generations.

Day-to-day you could expect to:

- Provide specialised technical advice on ecosystem management to inform operational programmes, policy development, and regulatory work.
- Lead the development and implementation of best practice methods for protecting and restoring priority ecosystems in Auckland.
- Lead the Biodiversity Focus Area Programme, the foundational programme for prioritising species and ecosystem management in the region.
- Coordinate biodiversity data analysis and communication with a range of partners to ensure effective ecosystem management and protection.
- Mentor and advise regional and area-based staff on ecosystem management practices and priorities.

**He kōrero mōu: About you**
You are an experienced ecologist, with a sound understanding of species and ecosystem management across Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland. You have project management experience and can lead a virtual team to deliver prioritised work. You are strategic, have excellent communication skills and know how to effectively build and maintain relationships.

We will be looking for someone with:

- Bachelor of Science degree in ecology or relevant discipline (Master's degree preferred).
- 7+ years of work experience in ecology or biodiversity conservation.
- Excellent knowledge of NZ ecology, ecosystem management techniques and experience with stakeholder/partner engagement/customer service.
- Demonstrated experience with budget and project/programme management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; experience with ESRI ArcGIS and ecological analysis software desirable

- _This role requires a _Full NZ Driver’s licence._
- _This role is deemed safety sensitive and, in line with Auckland Council policy, you will be required to complete pre-employment drug & alcohol testing._
- _Qualification Checks will be conducted along with other relevant pre-employment checks required for employment with Auckland Council._
- Our employer Kiwisaver contribution is additional to base salary offered._
