The Whaikaha High Care Area is a 4-bed inpatient Intellectual Disability (ID) unit at Hillmorton Hospital. PSAID/ Te Aroha is a 6 bed mental health/ intellectual disability unit. Our ID Team is on a journey of innovation and evolution in delivering the best possible care to our tāngata whaiora. Here, we are focusing on short and longer-term rehabilitation and acute care interventions of our tāngata whaiora by discovering and building on their personal strengths and providing a supported transition back to their communities.

Delivering a high standard of care is important to the Whaikaha and PSAID teams and the addition of our new contemporary facility, which augments our existing service, allows us to offer individualised care and strengthens our ability to implement our models of care.

Our focus is on a person’s individual skills and abilities to maintain their independence whilst encouraging them to develop new skills. We facilitate a variety of communication techniques to support the person to understand their treatment options and to make decisions. We promote the person to remain engaged with the wider community to maintain their social networks and advocate continuum of care, liaising with the community outpatient team, the residential provider and their caregivers to support successful discharge planning into the community setting.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

- Supporting consumers to engage in meaningful activities in the inpatient areas and in the community as delegated by the services Allied Health Clinicians-this includes Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Physiotherapists and Behaviour Specialists.
- Facilitating and co-facilitating a range of 1-1 and group therapeutic activities based on the person’s level of functioning, their interests and positive behaviour support plans.
- Supporting access to community leave to support social inclusion.
- Setting up therapeutic activities, following session plans and feeding back to the Allied Health Clinician regarding the session outcome and consumers progress.

You will be required to work across both inpatient units within Intellectual Disability.

Salary starting from $69,975. Based on the PSA Allied, Public Health, Scientific and Technical Collective Agreement.

- Current Full Drivers Licence is essential
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills

- Ability to work well under pressure
- Ideally experience as an Allied Health Assistant or similar
- Experience in a setting working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is desirable but not essential.
