Principal Counsel (Commercial and Property)

A substantial leadership role, with the opportunity to be supported to grow your leadership capabilities with an extensive in-house development programme, while being involved in a wide range of interesting commercial mahi.

The Wellington City Council (WCC) legal team are continuing to implement their revised structure and grow their workforce, to make sure their people can take advantage of the amazing work opportunities that arise from the varied and challenging work they do.

**The work**

The two legal teams at WCC do amazing, complex, and varied work for our city. The commercial team supports all aspects of councils commercial and property function including development agreements and leasing (Property Law), large scale construction projects (Te Matapihi library, the Sludge Minimisation project, Town Hall redevelopment, social housing upgrades and many commercial agreements.

WCC are looking for someone to lead and build the Commercial and Property team, to provide strategic, solutions focused legal advice relevant to commercial and property issues, insurance, risk and legislation. Working closely alongside the regulatory team, the Principal Counsel will also:

- lead the team’s review and drafting of major organisational contracts and provide legal opinions to the ELT and Senior Managers
- support the General Counsel in responding to high risk and large-scale issues facing the Council
- work closely with external legal services providers in relation to specific pieces of legal work
- lead collaboratively alongside and work closely with the Principal Counsel (Regulatory)
- provide risk management advice to the organisation

**About you**

As the Principal Legal Counsel (Commercial and Property), you will:

- have at least 7 years PQE, ideally including some in-house legal public sector experience
- be able to demonstrate strong knowledge & experience of commercial issues, ideally in a regulatory setting
- be passionate about leadership and building a supportive team environment
- be able to provide strategic, solutions focused legal advice in a fast-paced environment
- thrive in uncertain and complex environments
