Mō tēnei tūranga - about the role The Legal Counsel provides legal advice and support across Fire and Emergency. Our team's work generally covers the areas of public and commercial law, as well as operational matters; and it includes:

- Statutory interpretation, including Fire and Emergency's legislative and regulatory requirements, its responsibilities as a Crown entity, Official Information Act requests, and advice on Privacy law
- Corporate activities including procurement, commercial contracts, property, information and communications technology (ICT)
- Legal issues regarding the built environment
- Operational emergency management
- Advice on internal and external publications
- Health and safety
- Investigations and regulatory compliance
- Litigation management for civil, criminal and coronial matters

As Legal Counsel, you will have the opportunity to work with fabulous Senior Legal Counsel and Principal Legal Counsel within the team. You will be supported to grow and develop your legal career in a fast paced but collaborative environment. This is a permanent role reporting directly to the Chief Legal Advisor. The role is based in our National Headquarters in Wellington and there are opportunities for flexible working arrangements. Ko tāu nā i tēnei tūranga - What you'll bring to the role: Bring your previous legal experience and a pragmatic approach and great relationship management skills with both internal and external stakeholders.To be successful in this role, we'd expect you will:

- Previous experience as a lawyer with at least 4 years' PQE, including some experience in the public sector.
- A current practising certificate.
- Planning and organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise and to deliver on time within a complex work environment with competing priorities.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- The desire to assist our organisation and consistently add value.
- Some understanding of the machinery of government and wider public sector, including the Public Service Commission.

The salary range for this role is $134,190 - 149,100, dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.Ko wai mātou - who are we?
