We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic assurance and audit practitioner to be practice lead for our valued Assurance and Audit team in one of the most diverse Public Service organisations. The Lead Auditor is the lead practitioner and expert advisor in the Assurance and Audit team, and reports to the Manager Assurance and Audit. They provide high-quality, considered advice on assurance and audit methodology and best practice across the team's work programme, and lead some of the teams more complex assurance and audit engagements. The Lead Auditor engages proactively with internal and external stakeholders and maintains a strong focus on adding value to the business by contributing to good risk management, business improvement and better outcomes.

You'll be part of the Te Urungi - Organisational Strategy and Performance Branch; a small branch with a big job. We help the Department to define and achieve its strategic objectives. Te Urungi, refers to a rudder or steering paddle of a waka and reinforces the role of our Branch in navigating towards the future. We provide advice and assurance to the Executive Leadership Team, and the wider Department regarding core aspects of good business management that underpin the Department's success.

**You will need to be**: approachable, easy to relate to, and enjoy building open and trusting relationships,a critical thinker, with good judgment, that can join the dots between information and identify constructive and practicable ways to improve systems and processes, anda strong communicator (both verbal and written) that can distil and convey complex issues and findings simply, succinctly and persuasively.

**You will also have**:

- five or more years of experience in assurance and audit, and a relevant specialist qualification,
- proven experience in leading and delivering assurance and audit assignments that make a difference, with sound understanding of methods and tools, internal control and risk management principles, and
- good knowledge of reporting and accountability principles, and a good understanding of audit and accountability documents.

Organisational Strategy and Performance | Te Urungi helps the Department to define and achieve its strategic objectives. We provide advice and assurance to the Executive Leadership Team, and the wider Department regarding core aspects of good business management that underpin the Department's success. We lead strategic planning and performance reporting, the implementation of Te Tari Taiwhenua's Māori Strategic Framework, and we advise on legal risks, the performance of the governance, risk and assurance system, and portfolio planning and performance.
