The Trainer is part of a national team of Trainers, who develop and deliver a national training and assessment programme for all operational Teams (Handlers, Team Leaders and dogs). This role is responsible for delivering certain Courses that have been planned in conjunction with the Manager Standards and Training, and the other Trainers; courses are held mainly at the Police Dog Training Centre at Trentham, and Auckland; this includes assisting with the Readiness Assessment for Handlers and dogs.
The role is also responsible for undertaking Regular Assessments of all operational Teams, providing national coverage in association with the other Trainers. The Trainer is required to manage a detector dog at operational level, ready for the dog to be deployed at short notice; although not required to maintain operational certification.
**In this role, you will be responsible for the following**:
- Work as part of a national team of Trainers, to develop and deliver a national training and assessment programme for all operational = Teams (Handlers, Team Leaders and dogs).
- Assist in research, design, writing, and development of training advances and materials as and when required.
- Provide progress reports as required to the National Standards and Training Manager on the implementation of prescribed training policy and practices.
- Work with the other Trainers, and with Handlers and Team Leaders to develop and oversee the implementation of training plans for all members of the organisation.
- Work with the other trainers to ensure that all Handlers and Team Leaders are scheduled sufficient time to maintain currency; for Supervised Training; and for timely re-certification as an Officer.
- Manage a detector dog at operational level, ready for the dog to be deployed at short notice to replace an ailing or non-performing dog.
- Holds or is studying towards a relevant animal behaviour/training qualification
- Demonstrated ability as an operational Handler.
- Demonstrated capability in the understanding of training principles, along with the ability to monitor requirements instigated by the Manager Standards and Training.
- Demonstrated ability at effectively mentoring and delivering quality training to others.
- Demonstrated understanding in the overall care and management of working detector dogs.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Committed to the principles of quality management and best practice.
