**He angitūtanga** | About the role**

This Heritage, Visitor and Community Supervisor role supports our Operation Manager to lead and supervise a team of Rangers and deliver agreed operational work priorities. The Supervisor assigns work to the team and provides support and coaching to build their capability and inspire them to continuously strive for great environmental outcomes. You will need to analyse and understand tasks, as well as team capability and capacity to decide how work should be delivered. You will have 8-9 direct reports at a time allowing you to lead the team in a way that inspires trust, respect, and continuous improvement in performance.

As a key part of the district's leadership team you will lead your team of rangers to deliver the district's recreation/historic and community work programmes in Geraldine and Oamaru. The successful applicant will be a natural leader and collaborator who enjoys the challenge of working in a dynamic and changing environment with a skilled team.

As a Supervisor you have defined leadership responsibilities including the ability to organise, lead technical work programmes and have a sound knowledge relating to:

- Maintenance of visitor and historic sites, assets and information
- Management and improvement of front country facilities and amenities
- Coordination of backcountry hut maintenance (helicopter operations)
- Visitor safety and risk management systems
- Volunteer recruitment and management (Mt Somers hut warden and Peel forest camp host)
- Statutory land administration, RMA, permits and concession processes
- Innovative relationships and partnerships with community groups, local agencies, Treaty partners and businesses

This is a permanent full-time role, based in the Geraldine District Office.

We are looking for a natural people leader who is passionate about supporting a positive team culture. You are not afraid to be out in the field with the team, incorporating a ‘management-by-walk-about' approach to your work. We are looking for someone with the confidence and awareness to engage with people from all walks of life. Ideally you will know how to engage effectively in a Te Ao Maori setting or a willingness to learn and develop your capability in this area, allowing you to work effectively with our Treaty partner.

You will be confident interacting with people from all walks of life with the natural ability to switch between tasks effortlessly. Your maturity and resilience to remain calm and focused when the workload is high means you can adapt to changing work priorities and deliver our work.

If you have the following skills and attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

- Experience in leading or supervising people along with knowledge of leadership principles from experience or a tertiary qualification
- Sound knowledge and practical experience of recreation/historic work and facilities management
- Ability to motivate, monitor and coach to enhance team performance
- Current full New Zealand driving licence
- Strong critical thinking and analysis skills
- Strong health and safety focus
- Excellent planning and organisational skills, with attention to detail and commitment to achieving team objectives
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills - skilled in formal written communications and reporting
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances when organising field programmes
- Physically fit
- Good backcountry skills and knowledge
- A sound understanding of conservation management, strategic and tactical thinking
- Familiarity with legislation relevant to conservation and how it applies to DOC's work (eg. Conservation Act, Marine Mammals Act, Wildlife Act, Reserves Act, Resource Management Act
- The ability to build positive working relationships across a broad range of public and private sectors, businesses and groups
