The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by:
- protecting land, species, ecosystems, and cultural heritage for conservation purposes

- connecting people to nature.
Mō tēnei tūranga | About the role
Our Heritage and Visitor Strategy, released in 2021, ensures we have a clear path to support the shift to a more sustainable and regenerative tourism system while delivering exceptional recreation experiences. Our role has been to: support the tourism industry's recovery from the pandemic, manage for the return of international visitors, and shift tourism to deliver greater environmental, social, cultural and economic benefits.
We are looking for a smart and ambitious Senior Insights Advisor with a passion for providing high quality advice to be a key influencer in the exciting changes that Te Papa Atawhai is making to strengthen our important heritage and visitor system.
**Our direction is**:
- A more strategically orientated heritage and visitor system with clearer priorities and a focus on the future.
- Insight driving effective decision making across the system.
- Significantly improving heritage and visitor management and engaging people in conservation
- Interdisciplinary teams working together to solve problems and unlock opportunities.
- Managing visitors and places to support the shift to a more sustainable and regenerative tourism system.
**Our challenges are**:
- A growing population and tourism industry and increasing interest in getting into the outdoors means greater use of public conservation lands and waters.
- Visitors are more diverse and interested in a wider range of experiences.
- Managing a million new visitors well demands new approaches and techniques, to protect conservation values and to ensure that visitors have great experiences.
This position can be based in either Christchurch or Wellington in the Insights and System Performance team and will ensure that DOC's heritage and visitor priorities are clear, that insight supports improved system performance, and efficient investment decisions are made. You will play a key role in developing a high-performing team that helps support DOC to succeed in an environment of growing visitor numbers, changing visitor and community expectations, and increasingly complex conservation management issues. As part of a small but pivotal team, your ability to work with and through others, both in and out of the department, will be critical. As will your ability to understand what insights and information is needed to think through policy problems clearly and impartially, and to communicate these insights in an accessible and compelling way.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

- Solid experience in data integration, sampling design and weighting techniques.
- Ability to lead strategically important customer insight projects.
- Storytelling skills, the ability to distil complex information to express ideas simply, with a focus on providing actionable insights for a range of technical and senior stakeholders.
- High level of comfort with ambiguity and iterative approaches.
- Strong interpersonal skills, relating well to all kinds of people, inside and outside the organisation.
- Ability to work collaboratively, building constructive and effective relationships and influencing policy and strategic direction using customer insights.
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you?
