The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) provides national leadership to New Zealand's distributed emergency management system. NEMA's primary focus is on the performance and capability of the emergency management system as a whole, across all hazards and all risks and the 4 Rs of risk reduction, readiness, response and recovery.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
In this role you will be providing thought leadership and expert advice to develop and enhance New Zealand's strategic framework for disaster recovery including the development of recovery policy and best practice guidance. The Principal Advisor, Recovery will take the lead at national and sometimes international levels, in representing the NEMA's position to advance recovery by actively engaging with relevant stakeholders, especially at strategic or sector-wide levels.
The role sits within the Risk and Recovery Unit. This unit is responsible for leading the development of hazard risk management and recovery policy and practice, including the development of strategic national frameworks and best practice guidance. The unit also coordinates science and technical advice on hazard risk management and coordinates central government recovery activities during and following emergencies.
N.B. As part of working within NEMA, there may be a requirement to respond to emergency activations in the event of a national emergency response. This may involve responding to events outside of normal working hours if an emergency response of national significance occurs.

- Delivering quality advice ensuring adherence to statutory obligations
- Exploring and identifying strategic risks
- Acting as a thought leader for recovery policy and practice
- Building strong stakeholder relationships - Local/Central Government, Iwi leaders, Ministers, Executives and NGOs across the emergency management sector
- Working in an operational environment (including international humanitarian experience) and operational decision-making.
- Willingness to grow Māori capability and cultural confidence

Ta matou e tuku | What we offer
The salary range for this role is $140,000 - $160,000 p/a including Kiwisaver contribution
