About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

The Principal Data Analyst provides expert insights into people and workforce data, supporting the People & Capability team in delivering strategic initiatives. This role balances strategic planning with hands-on data analysis to inform decision-making within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Stakeholder Management: Be compelling and confident in speaking to leadership teams. You are a true people person.
  2. Analytical Reporting: Proven experience in detailed analytical reporting in an HR/people focused environment.
  3. Development of Analytical Tools and Data Sets: Develop and maintain data structures, not just use them.
  4. Multifactor Analysis: Integrate data from various sources to create a comprehensive picture and use data to tell a story.
  5. Interest in Causation: Investigate trends to understand why they occur and their potential impacts.
  6. Strategic Workforce Planning: Knowledge and experience in strategic workforce planning, talent management, and other HR disciplines.
  7. Communication: Produce papers, presentations, and products that effectively highlight key data findings.

About You - Mōu

We are seeking a candidate with a robust background in data analytics and stakeholder engagement. You thrive on collaborating with the business to understand future data requirements and reporting needs. You are future-focused, working strategically to combine analytics with workforce planning.

You may not be a traditional data scientist or technical expert but perhaps you have a research background or a diverse range of experiences that make you a great fit for this role. Experience in the preparation and use of data across HR disciplines is highly regarded. Excel skills are essential and Power BI skills advantageous. Some level of Public Sector knowledge will be beneficial.

Your passion lies in uncovering the "why" behind the numbers. We are looking for someone who can bring fresh ideas and make a meaningful impact.

  1. Proven ability to deliver insights from data sets.
  2. Experience in developing data models and analysis.
  3. Strong analytical and conceptual skills.
  4. Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  5. Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Our team is diverse and collaborative, working across People & Capability and Corporate Services. We support strategic workforce planning and decision-making through data insights. The team collaborates closely on projects. We value fun and teamwork, and our work supports the strategic direction of MPI. We comprise of two technical team members and we like to maintain a productive yet relaxed environment, deploying a good sense of humour as we work.
