Pedologist (early career)

We are looking for an early career Pedologist to help us map, model and research New Zealand's valuable soil and land resources.

About the opportunity

The purpose of this role is to undertake and support research and consultancy for soil and landscape mapping, modelling, and information management.

The role will contribute to research and commercial contracts on pedology, characterisation and evaluation of New Zealand soil resources, soil survey methods (including soil mapping), and the development of our soils information resources.

Specifically, the role supports on-going development of S-map and related soil information, including site selection, soil characterisation, soil sampling, and mapping, and pedology, land evaluation, and other soils research (e.g. soil carbon, soil health).

The position will also contribute to soils-related research and projects primarily in the Characterising Land Resources and Managing Land and Water portfolios.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position (3 years) reporting to a Capability Leader within the Soils & Landscapes Team, and will be located at our Hamilton site.

About you

You will have a Master's or postgraduate qualification in Soil Science or related discipline, or Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus demonstrated experience and knowledge in pedology, soil survey, or land resources survey.

You will have a knowledge of pedology and soil characterisation, especially regarding principles of soil formation, soil classification, and soil-landscape relationships, and an ability to characterise soil profiles and assess soil properties, along with some experience in conducting field survey work.

We require competence with Geographic Information Systems, and an appreciation of modern soil mapping techniques and technologies. Familiarity with writing research proposals, undertaking research, and the publication of reports or papers will be viewed favourably.

You will have excellent communication skills, physical fitness, and be able to regularly work in the field, with the flexibility to travel and work in different locations across New Zealand.

Experience working with farmers, Māori landowners, rural support agencies, and regional councils is desirable.
