Field Soil Surveyor

We are looking for an enthusiastic Field Soil Surveyor to help us map and investigate New Zealand's valuable soil and land resources.

About the opportunity

This is a practical and skilled position suitable for a degree-qualified (or similarly experienced) graduate with a demonstrated interest in soils, soil mapping or land/environment mapping, and who are truly interested in a technical position that involves a mix of working outdoors, technical skills, research support, data collection and collation, and the opportunity to visit out-of-way farms and locations throughout NZ.

At a more specific level, this position will provide support for research and commercial contracts focused on the characterisation and evaluation of New Zealand soil resources (principally Manaaki Whenua's S-Map), as well as research projects aimed at enhancing our understanding of how our soils function.

The position will mostly contribute to soils-related research and projects in Manaaki Whenua's Characterising Land Resources and Managing Land and Water Portfolios.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position (3 years), based in Hamilton, and reporting to a Capability Leader within the Soils & Landscapes Team.

About you

You will have a Bachelor's degree in Soil Science or a relevant degree ideally with some experience in agriculture, conservation, land management or environmental management.

You will have a demonstrated interest in pedology and soil characterisation, with skills in soil mapping, soil profile description, soil classification, and field work procedures.

Supplementary training regarding S-Map soil mapping and sampling will be provided. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), S-Map Online, and land evaluation systems would be a definite plus. An ability to liaise successfully with farmers, Māori landowners, and regional council staff is also desirable. The role requires a high level of physical fitness and a willingness to travel throughout New Zealand.
