At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

The Senior Communications Advisor, Organisational Communications is an important role within the Organisational Communications team, which sits in the Ministry's Communications, Engagement & Ministerials team.


In this role, you will:

  • Act as a trusted advisor and influencer to lead end to end complex internal communications projects, programmes and advice, including new initiatives which support Te Tāhuhu's purpose and strategic objectives.
  • Lead internal stakeholder engagement at an organisational level to support culture change and development, ensuring approaches, messaging and priorities are joined up across Te Tāhuhu.
  • Persuade, influence and inspire across Te Tāhuhu and the sector through communications advice and professional expertise.
  • Work closely with communications capability embedded within the business and the wider communications team to deliver a highquality internal communications service, positioning the Ministry of Education as a proactive partner with staff and to the sector.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of the Communications business strategy in line with the Ministry's purpose and strategic priorities, ensuring corporate communications strategies are joined up as internal communications services are delivered.
  • Make sure all communications material reflects the Ministry posture, strategy and priorities in line with the Communications business strategy, acting as a steward and enabler of the business messages.
  • Work in partnership with Māori to incorporate Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership principles into Ministry internal communications, strategies and channels.

You will be a team player who thrives on working at pace and managing deadlines and demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


You will also have the following experience:

  • Experience working in a senior communications role in a large and complex organisation
  • Experience in a range of communications roles
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti | The Treaty of Waitangi, it's implications for our work and ability to engage with and through others in this space
  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies and plans that encompass a broad spectrum of communications activities including: strategic communications, media/social media, stakeholder engagement, channels, internal and external communications
  • Demonstrated ability and experience working effectively within a political environment
  • Understanding of the machinery of government
