Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission leads the public sector to make a positive difference for New Zealand and New Zealanders.

As a business unit within the Commission, Ara Kaiarahitanga | Leadership Development Centre is the primary delivery vehicle for system-wide leadership development.


We are looking for a capability specialist to lead a small but highly skilled team working with agencies, chief executives and leaders to support the development of leaders.

The role works closely with public service Development Boards to target development opportunities to the right leader at the right time.

To do this means knowing our leaders, knowing the public service and understanding the levers for lifting capability.

Are you
- passionate about leadership development and committed to making a difference across the Public Service.
- a capability specialist, with strong knowledge of the current talent management tools used across the public service.
- a relationship building who enjoys working collaboratively.

Do you have?
- substantial experience working in HR, OD or L&D with relevant tertiary qualification and/or specialist certification adding to your kete of knowledge.
- experience working alongside individual leaders and leadership teams to build capability at an individual and agency level.
- experience developing strategies and implementing tools to lift agency or system capability, with the ability to simplify the complex for a variety of audiences.
- a wide network across the public sector, with those working in agencies on capability development and contracted providers offering coaching services.
- the ability to work at both a strategic and operational level simultaneously, making day to day delivery decisions that achieve ambitious strategic outcomes

About the team:


As a business unit within the Te Kawa Mataaho, Public Service Commission, LDC is the primary delivery vehicle for system-wide leadership development.

The LDC is focused on developing consistent learning experiences across the public service to build strong leadership capabilities and encourage shared mindsets in our leaders.

This role will lead our team and our thinking on how we work with individual leaders, how we target their development, how we know which development program is right for them, how we support them when they are on the learning edge.

This position usually pays between $122,380 to $150,940 depending on skills and experience.
