Te āhua o Te Tūrunga – The nature of the position

We are looking for a subject matter expert who will work across our teams of Quality Assurance and Qualifications with a particular focus on incorporating an equity and te ao Māori perspective into all aspects of our work. Reporting directly to the GM Quals and Standards and the GM Quality Assurance you will be a trusted advisor, providing technical leadership and strategic advice across the two groups.

As our Senior Advisor Māori Quality Assurance and Qualifications, you'll play a critical role in shaping and delivering all parts of our work programme. This will include the following:

Joint Quality Assurance and Qualifications

  • Lead and advise on engagement specifically with iwi and Māori organisations within and beyond the food and fibre sector to honour Te Tiriti of Waitangi and ensure that te ao Māori, Mātauranga Māori and te reo Māori are incorporated into the work of Muka Tangata and that the aspirations of Māori within the food and fibre sector are clearly determined, acknowledged and addressed.
  • Lead the embedding of a te ao Māori perspective into the Quality Assurance and Enhancement and Qualifications and Standards teams' work programmes that support ākonga Māori success.
  • Lead and collaborate across Muka Tangata teams to support Quality Assurance and Enhancement and Qualifications and Standards team te ao Māori objectives and outputs.
  • Advise on and interpret te reo Māori matters and documents, being the source of expertise within the teams.
  • Identify, build and maintain solid, collaborative relationships, both internally and externally, in order to enhance success for Māori businesses, iwi, and communities - Utilise Mātauranga Māori and te reo Māori as tools to support Māori success.

  • Support capability building across the WDC through an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Work with Te Tiriti o Waitangi partners to co-design functions and activities and influence, engage and embed initiatives across the system.
  • Ensure that Muka Tangata's work is informed and agreed by our partners and reporting requirements are met.
  • Demonstrate how work supports Māori Crown relationships.
  • Influence positive behaviours within industries and employers to impact success for Māori in the VET system.

This position provides an excellent opportunity to provide leadership and hands-on expertise in an organisation which puts equity and our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi at the core of what we do.

Some of the skills and attributes we are looking for are:

  • Confidence and subject matter expertise in equity issues and ability to apply this expertise to quality assurance and qualification development work.
  • Ability to incorporate and provide subject matter expertise in applying a te ao Māori lens to our work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including how to make our messages accessible and engaging to diverse communities.
  • Ability to build capability and provide advice on equity and te ao Māori perspectives in working across our teams.
  • Ability to constructively work with people and groups from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, including te ao Māori.

Flexibility and willingness to get stuck in – we are a young organisation and we are growing and shaping the role we will play in the sector. Ability to innovate, challenge, collaborate and build how our groups will operate will be key.
