We have a fantastic opportunity for you to join Puawai: Midland Regional Forensic Psychiatric Service at Te Whatu Ora - Waikato as an Alcohol and Other Drugs ( AOD) clinician working across two of our forensic inpatient wards - Puna Maatai and Puna Awhi Rua.


This role includes conducting comprehensive clinical AOD assessments and developing collaborative individual treatment plans with people affected by substance use.

Therapeutic interventions may include motivational interviewing, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and relapse prevention. There may also be opportunities to co-facilitate therapeutic AOD and dual diagnosis groups.


These wards support some of our most vulnerable and unwell taangata whaiora, whom can often present with significant risk and complex presentations.

Required skills & experience you will need to be considered for this role:

  • You will be an experienced professional (qualification in applied AOD studies, nursing, social work, counselling, psychology, occupational therapy or related fields) registered with DAPAANZ or equivalent professional body who is seeking an opportunity to work in a cohesive well supported team and further develop your AOD expertise.
  • A sense of social justice and enjoying working with people in all their complexity is required.
  • You will have a nonjudgemental attitude, excellent engagement and communication skills, and an ability to work autonomously within a team.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
