Position Description: Mental Health Nurse

Objective

Etu Pasifika Mental Health Nurse will work in an organisation that cultivates a family orientated, partnership focussed and work from an integrated health care approach. The Mental Health Nurse will work along key multidisciplinary team members, whose purpose is to support Pacific families in achieving optimum health and social advancements. To guarantee Pacific family's access to key health and social services, Etu Pasifika personnel will also assist in the community.

Reports to: Nurse Lead

Key role:

This role is to provide Mental Health support to Pacific families enrolled with Etu Pasifika Christchurch. In addition, the Mental Health Nurse will be supported to train as a Health Improvement Practitioner to provide brief interventions in the clinic for patients presenting with low-moderate mental health needs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Being able to engage effectively with Pacific families and build relationships based on partnership.
  • Assessment of mental health presentations and administration of screening tools including Kessler 10 and Edinburgh.
  • Support families/individual with their mental well-being.
  • Network and build partnerships with mental health organisations who in the community.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with diverse cultures.
  • Commitment to working in a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Record accurate and concise data into the appropriate data system.
  • Provide timely reporting when required.
  • Can work independently with complex patients and develop risk management plans.

Knowledge, Competencies/Skills, and Experience

  • Commitment to ongoing development of nursing skills and in-service education.
  • Accepts responsibility for ensuring that his/her nursing practice and conduct meet the standards of the professional, ethical and relevant legislated requirements.
  • Practises nursing in accord with relevant legislation/codes/policies and upholds health consumers rights derived from that legislation.
  • Updates knowledge related to administration of interventions, treatments, medications and best practice guidelines within area of practice.
  • Understanding key mental health theories, skills and frameworks and applying it to practices.
  • Identifies and reports situations that affect health consumers or staff members' health or safety.
  • Recognises and manages risks to provide care that best meets the needs and interests of health consumers at Etu Pasifika Christchurch.
  • Be prepared to undertake other duties as a reasonably requested by Leads and Clinical Director.
  • Represents the organisation in a committed manner, projecting a professional image of mental health nursing.
  • Provide brief intervention for low mental health needs as a health improvement practitioner. Training will be provided for the successful applicant if needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree
  • Current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Current CPR Certificate
  • Post graduate papers in Mental Health Nursing – or complementary qualifications that support necessary skills and knowledge in the Mental Health field.
  • Indemnity Insurance
  • Minimum of two years clinical experience working in the Mental Health

Experience:

  • Competency with Pacific cultural protocols
  • Fluency in a Pacific language is welcomed
  • Relationship or previous work experience with Pacific communities
  • Ability to work within a Pacific value-based methodology such as 'Talanoa'.

Essential to the Role:

  • A Clean, current full driver's license
