Manukau, Auckland, New Zealand Auckland Council Full time
Drive and unlock Auckland's strategic response to the climate crisis

  • Work with our organisation's political and executive leadership to deliver positive, sustainability outcomes for the Auckland region
  • Lead a dynamic and passionate team across a range of internal and external focussed action areas

He angitūtanga:
The opportunity

Auckland Council is currently seeking our next Chief Sustainability Officer to lead our organisation's response to climate change and champion sustainability outcomes for the broader Auckland region.

We are moving into the next phase of delivery, leadership, and future planning since the adoption of Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan.

You will provide strategic leadership and influence across the council family, as well as with external stakeholders and partners, to bring about the fundamental system and behaviour changes needed to deliver on the region's climate and sustainability commitments.

You will help our organisation reshape our processes, policies and programmes across a range of sustainability dimensions.

This is a dynamic and varied role where you will need to work across a broad range of stakeholders on diverse topics relevant to organisational and regional development.

As part of your role, you'll:

  • be accountable for the delivery and ongoing development of Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan, focussed on ensuring the council family is aware of the actions that it needs to take to deliver on the plan
- draw together and unify the broad range of stakeholders and sectors (internal and external) involved in delivering sustainability action
- provide clear and compelling direction and guidance to the organisation and the organisational leadership on our sustainability journey
- advocate for the required behavioural and systemic changes needed by our organisation
- front committee meetings and engagement with mana whenua on issues relating to sustainability and climate change

He kōrero mōu:
About you

We are looking for an inspirational leader who forms strong, effective relationships and empowers others to act together on a range of sustainability and climate change challenges.

You are comfortable navigating complex organisational and political environments with a clear understanding of the change required to meet the region's commitments.

You are familiar with, and are actively involved in shaping emerging national and international best practice, trends and priorities across sustainability and climate action, particularly within the context of the issues facing a rapidly growing city region.

An excellent verbal and written communicator, you have experience navigating complex organisational and political environments at executive and governance levels.

You have the ability to manage high-volume and complex projects and workflows, and have an appreciation of the big picture and an eye for detail.

In addition, our ideal person will have:

  • technical understanding of climate science and sustainability principles
- proven experience in the delivery of sustainability and climate action
- a strong ability to influence and drive change at leadership levels
- the ability to engage with media
- a robust understanding of local government levers to meet a range of climate/sustainability outcomes, for example in the areas of land use planning, climate risk and adaptation, emissions reduction, infrastructure sustainability, and waste management

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou:
What we offer

Auckland is a rapidly growing region.

This growth brings huge opportunity, but also a range of challenges to ensure that growth is sustainable and resilient to the impacts of a changing climate.

In response to these challenges and opportunities, the region has established a vision of Auckland for the future through the Auckland Plan and set bold aspirations for climate action, through Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan, including halving regional emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

Auckland is also an active member of key leadership networks such as the global C40 Cities Leadership Group and New Zealand's Climate Leaders Coalition.

Ensuring the region is strategically aligned to deliver on these sustainability commitments is the key focus for the Chief Sustainability Office.

Look forward to coming to work every day knowing that you are leading a team of high calibre, passionate climate change specialists who are making a positive difference in our journey towards a zero-emissions, resilient and more equitable region.
