Principal Commercial and Revenue Advisor at Department of Conservation, Wellington
  • Influence operational commercial strategy on a national scale.
  • Expand your career in this high functioning and collaborative team.
  • Permanent, full-time position based in Dunedin, Wellington, Hamilton or Christchurch.

If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive

Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC ) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Our Commercial Team works closely with internal stakeholder groups to influence and drive commercial pricing behaviours with the overall aim of delivering the results sought by DOC (e.g., optimise return, incentivise the right visitor behaviour, drive economic efficiency, implement a fair and reasonable fee structure).

The team also provides commercial advice to influence operational business strategy and ministerial advice. We do this through the development of innovative economic tools, pricing, and commercial analysis to support sustainable allocation and protection of conservation resources.

DOC manages approximately a third of all land in New Zealand. Most activities on public conservation land require approval from DOC, typically in the form of a concession. Over 2,500 incredibly varied businesses operate on conservation land, from large-scale ski fields and hydroelectric generators to small guiding tramping operations. Pricing and commercial frameworks are required to ensure equity and consistency in DOC's management.

As Principal Commercial and Revenue Advisor you will provide expert commercial advice and lead the development, updating, and implementing commercial pricing models for concessionaires within our regulatory services space, including implementing fit-for-purpose valuation methods and pricing policies, and leading negotiations of high value/high risk opportunities with individual businesses.

You will work to embed commercial acumen within the Department, with the overall aim of delivering the results sought by DOC. To inform your thinking and strategic advice, you will be quick to identify national and international developments in valuation and commercial models that can be applied to our landscape. You will interpret and provide commercial subject matter expertise in briefings and strategy development.

In this role you'll also get the opportunity to develop your leadership skills within the Commercial team with whakawhanaungatanga as a guiding principle and approach to how you conduct business.

The position requires someone who is commercially astute, a skilled communicator and strongly aligned to our Kaupapa.

Ideally, you'll come from a commercial, financial, or strategic background with experience in valuations, pricing, or a related field.

To be considered for the role you will have:

  • advanced commercial management skills, including interpreting contract terms and legislative provisions and a high-level capability to apply commercial principles (ideally in a conservation context)
  • a proven ability to analyse problems and identify process improvements to achieve solutions, including process improvements for commercial operational frameworks
  • strong research methodology and analytical skills
  • advanced experience in managing stakeholder engagements and partnerships, with the ability to lead and influence commercial negotiations and projects
  • strong understanding of the commercial context for businesses (ideally operating on conservation land)
  • strong cultural awareness – able to engage and work in partnership with whānau, hapū and iwi and understands the implications of the Treaty on today's society and the Conservation Act's Section 4 requirements
  • good communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into concise and clear communications for diverse audiences.

The Department of Conservation /Te Papa Atawhai places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow. We're working towards being an organisation that is diverse, equitable and inclusive by default.

If you require any accommodations or adjustments throughout the recruitment process, please do let us know.
