Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity We have an opportunity for an experienced regulatory leader to manage our South Island Safer Vehicles team.

This team consists of three direct reports; a team manager who is responsible for leading a team of certification officers, an investigator and a team administrator.

In this role you will ensure delivery of the regulatory functions through effective leadership and implementation of compliance activities within the vehicle certification industry.

You will also be responsible for managing and setting the strategic direction for the team in line with Tu Ake Tu Maia (our Regulatory Strategy) and our Te ao Māori principles to embed a culture of regulatory excellence through education, advice, deterrence, and enforcement.

Ko koe tēnei | About you This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced regulatory leader looking for their next challenge.

To be successful in this role you will bring the following:

  • Be an experienced people leader with the ability to manage a remote team
  • Demonstrated experience working in a complex regulatory, compliance or enforcement environment
  • Extensive experience within the vehicle inspection/mechanical industry
  • Be passionate developing and leading high performing teams in a trusting and supportive environment


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

Ko wai mātou | About usThe Safer Vehicles team is responsible for regulating Inspecting Organisations and Vehicle Inspectors who are appointed by Waka Kotahi to undertake vehicle certifications such as WoF and CoF and other specialist certifications.

Maintaining the compliance of our Inspecting Organisations and Vehicle Inspectors ensures that all vehicles that are entering the New Zealand fleet or that are already in it are safe to drive on New Zealand roads.
