Market Technical Specialist
Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the High Voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand.
In addition to owning and operating the grid, Transpower also operates the electricity system, dispatching electricity though the wholesale electricity market.
About the team
The Markets and Business Team drives value through improving market performance, informing market development, and enhancing market understanding.
This is particularly crucial as the market adapts to new and sustainable technologies such as solar panels, EV's and battery storage.
About the opportunity
In Wellington, we have an opportunity for a Markets Technical Specialist to join the Market and Security of Supply team who are responsible for supporting the Wholesale Electricity Market, and Transpower in its role as the System Operator.
Aspects of the role include analysis of the electricity market systems, security of supply, maintenance of the market model, and provision of information and advice to support internal and external stakeholders and projects.
You will provide a practical, broad view of the performance, resilience, and complexity of the market system as it is today and as it is developing.
Occasionally, you may be expected to provide out of hours, on call, expert backup support services to Real Time processes to assist the resolution of undesirable or complex market situations.
With no two days the same, you'll:
- Provide mentoring, technical guidance, coaching and recognition to team members
- Provide assistance, guidance and coaching to groups and individuals across the division as agreed with the Market and Security of Supply Manager and the Market and Business Manager
- Liaise with and assist the team with queries or market issues which require extended investigation
- Ensure systems and processes meet requirements of applicable statute, rules, policy and procedures
Delivering effective technical expertise and support, you will be able to prioritise work including projects, whilst demonstrating agility, flexibility and resilience in assessing often fluid situations that require answers at short notice.
To be considered, your CV and covering letter will demonstrate:
- Advanced understanding of electricity market design
- Coaching and mentoring experience
- Deep electricity market understanding (Regulations, code, Service Provider roles, historical context, recent events, market system, economics)
- Good understanding of the theory underlying the market system and the market process
- Good understanding of hydrology and shortage risk in the electricity system
Join us at Transpower
Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. Every home, every marae, every electric vehicle, every hospital relies on the electricity we manage and deliver.
Next Steps
Role closes Sunday 20 August. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and initial conversations may take place prior to the closing date.
Existing eligibility to work in New Zealand is preferred.
