About the role...


A great opportunity for a Procurement Specialist is on offer to take the lead on day to day procurement and long term strategic objectives for Customs, bringing experienced procurement knowledge, (ideally Government) to enable you to hit the ground running and provide valuable support to the business groups.

This role reports to the Property and Procurement Manager and is based in our Wellington Customhouse.

Your key responsibilities in this role will be

  • To provide timely and accurate procurement advice and support in accordance with the Government Procurement Rules, Customs Procurement Policy and Procedures for the sourcing of goods and services;
  • To provide support relating to the procurement process including tenders, contract renewals, contract variations;
  • To lead end to end procurement processes/projects including complex and/or high risk procurement.

To be successful as the Procurement Specialist, the appointee requires the following knowledge, experience, skills and personal attributes**- A relevant tertiary education qualification or equivalent. MCIPS would be preferable - but not essential;

  • At least 4 years' experience in a procurement, sourcing or contract related role preferably working in a government environment;
  • Ability to deliver significant procurement projects to scope, time and budget and achieving successful procurement outcomes;
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills to be able to, effectively convey concepts and strategy to a wide range of stakeholders;
  • A well organised approach with the ability to prioritise, work effectively autonomously or as part of a team and without frequent direct supervision.

Joining Customs
To join Customs in any role you must be a
New Zealand citizen or
NZ permanent resident.


You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be, assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.

Due to the nature of Customs work, you must have a clear Police record. Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test.
