We are seeking a Principal Advisor, Clinical (0.5FTE) to work directly with the Chief Science Advisor and Deputy Chief Science Advisor supporting the delivery of excellent, topical and timely advice on health issues of the day.


  • Part time, 3 year fixedterm role. Secondment from another role is an option.
  • Salary midpoint of $145,883, actual salary dependent on your experience.

Ko tōu ake mahi - What You'll Do

The Office of the Chief Science Advisor is a dynamic and high-profile area within our new Evidence, Research and Innovation Directorate.

The Office is responsible for providing scientific and technical leadership within Manatū Hauora (the Ministry) and across the health system that provides strategic and future focused insights to build a new, fit-for-purpose, learning healthcare system.

In this role you will use your clinical and scientific knowledge to create and deliver high quality clinically focussed advice on priority health issues.

As you contribute to a culture of evidence-based learning, your written evidence will support the development of health policy, strategy and effective executive and operational decision making across the Ministry.

In this role you'll work closely with the Chief Science Advisor, Deputy Chief Science Advisor and Chief Clinical Officers to support the strategic direction of the Ministry and the wider health system.

Ko ngā pukenga ōu - What You'll Bring

  • A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) and current medical registration (Practising Certificate)
  • Demonstrated ability to provide practical clinical insights that support equitable health outcomes for all
  • Proficiency in producing and communicating the highest standard of clinical advice on complex health topic(s)
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills, including ability to deliver effectively to agency executives and Ministers
  • Proven thought leadership
  • Ability to deliver ambitious projects in a short timeframe
  • An understanding and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations, and the importance of making shifts towards equity
