As a branded business unit within MPI, we work with tangata whenua, landowners and the forestry and wood processing sectors to make the most of our forests contribution to Aotearoa New Zealand's social, cultural, environmental, and economic wellbeing.

Kōrero mō te tūranga│About the Role
Te Uru Rākau holds a unique position as the steward of the production forestry system in Aotearoa, New Zealand. We are driven by a multi-decade strategy to achieve our mission to make the most of our forests' contribution. We have a bold plan for transformation across the industry and are gearing up to support its delivery.

This central leadership role within Te Uru Rākau sets and holds that future vision for the organisation, ensuring that our strategic direction, operating model, and resources are lined up to deliver on that plan.

As the kaitiaki for the vision, you will work within the organisation to drive our own transformation in response.

You will lead the development of our mid-term plans and work alongside your colleagues to set our annual business plans.

Working on behalf of Te Uru Rākau, your collaboration across MPI and key agencies will be central to delivering our work programmes.

To demonstrate our delivery of priority initiatives and ensure our mission is realised, your team will provide business governance, management & reporting that ensures alignment of people and process
Effective relationships and close partnerships are key to realisation of our industry transformation plan.

With a strong focus on effective partnerships with Māori, you will be accountable for creating a platform that allows Te Uru Rākau to make enduring relationships that extend beyond the issues of the day and support the aspirations of Māori for their whenua.

Mōu│About You

To be successful in the role, you will be an established, multi-faceted and credible leader, someone who is able to engage with and influence key senior stakeholders, whilst leading and influencing the strategic direction of an organisation.


  • Have an exceptional strategic delivery lens, with the ability to provide thought leadership and advice across the directorate on best practice approaches and continuous improvement towards a vision.
  • Have a curious and sharp strategic mind, with the ability to approach new initiatives or unseen challenges pragmatically, whilst enabling partnerships and ensuring stakeholders are brought along with you.
  • Bring experience in business operations and human resource management, where you have led large complex programmes of work around change, or ways of working, having also managed budgets and aligned people to obtain successful outcomes.
  • Bring strong relationship management experience, including the ability to successfully engage and partner with diverse audiences, navigating with appropriate sensitivity whilst balancing stakeholder needs.
  • Have experience in both the private and public sectors, bringing a strong commercial nous and budget vs strategy awareness, as well as the ability to navigate the machinery of Government.
