Mō te tūnga | About the rolesThe Policy Managers lead teams of 8-10 staff to drive policy change across the responsibilities of Oranga Tamariki.
The permanent role will lead the Transitions, Employment, Education and Housing team.
This role will lead an important work programme to improve outcomes for young people transitioning from care and youth justice settings to adulthood.
This includes advice on employment, education and training. It will also hold responsibility for advice on housing opportunities for all children and young people.The fixed term role will lead the Rights and Children's system team.
This team is responsible for providing policy advice on significant issues impacting the children's system such as the response to Dame Karen Poutasi review of the children's system response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into abuse in state care.
The role also leads our advice on disability issues and looks to make sure all our policy advice across the Group takes a strong rights-based approach.
In performing these roles, the Policy Managers will develop and maximise the capability of the staff in their team and the overall capability of the Policy Group.
The Policy Manager will be expected to work across the organisation and other relevant departments.Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring
Key requirements of the role include:
- An appropriate tertiary qualification or considerable relevant practical experience.
- Experience in developing and managing high performing teams and working on individual development plans
- Experience in producing and recognising high quality policy work and in providing peer support and coaching to others
- Understanding and appreciation of crosscultural issues and concerns, in particular; knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples' culture
- Demonstrated experience in analysing a complex range of information, and critical thinking to help leadership with informed decision making.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the policy development process, and of parliamentary processes and the workings of legislation
- A good understanding of policy implementation and the issues likely to impact on it.
