Our Ecology & Water Science team is heavily involved in the Te Ara o

Te Ata:

Mt Messenger Bypass project near New Plymouth and we are looking for more Ecologists to join the project team.

We are seeking Junior/Intermediate Ecologists with a minimum of 2 years professional experience across the fields of terrestrial and/or freshwater ecology.

You'll be working on a challenging and exciting project, ad your role will primarily be field based.

You will have the opportunity to work with a range of threatened NZ fauna groups (bats, birds (including kiwi), invertebrates, lizards and freshwater fish) and have the opportunity to be involved in a diverse fieldwork programme, receive lots of training and be part of a great team of technical ecological specialists.


These full-time positions will commence in February 2023 and will be based in New Plymouth, at the Mt Messenger project office in Bell Block.

tōu rourou | What you'll bring**- A minimum of a Bachelors degree in Ecology, Zoology, Botany or closely related discipline, MSc desirable

  • A minimum 2 years' professional work experience in a consulting, regulatory and / or research environment
  • Experience in basic report writing
  • Good communication skills, able to confidently communicate with a range of people
  • Experience with basic data collection, management and record keeping
  • GIS skills and digital mapping competencies desirable
  • A love of the outdoors and very good level of fitness
  • Be backcountry competent and comfortable working in remote and rough terrain
  • Have orientation, compassing and GPS skills
  • Be comfortable learning to handle fish, lizards, and birds with direction from appropriately trained and qualified trainers
  • Be adaptable and flexible to working hours evening and dawn work expected due to the nature of the work
  • Focused on teamwork and positive outcomes you need to work well with others, be able to take direction from experts and appreciate the diversity of others you are working with
  • Be Health and Safety conscious you will also be expected to undertake and pass drug tests
  • Solution focused with problem solving skills and professional initiative
  • Full NZ drivers licence (preferred)
