We are looking for a passionate Neonatologist to work in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which has a total of 41 cots, 17 level three (intensive care) cots, 12 level one (low acuity), 12 level two (intermediate care).

The NICU at Waikato Hospital looks after approximately 1000 inpatients annually including 160 born at or below 32 weeks gestation.

This is a fixed term 1.0 FTE appointment as SMO, Neonatology, commensurate with level of experience as per ASMS enterprise agreement.


The successful applicant will be required to provide clinical care for neonates, including inpatients of the NICU, outpatient follow-up care, consultation to neonatal patients on the maternity ward and women expecting a complicated high risk birth, and participation in the on-call roster.

The successful applicant will be expected to supervise junior medical staff, Advanced Trainees and liaise with referring practitioners.

Appropriate involvement and participation in unit research activities, administrative and departmental tasks and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as requested by the Head of Department would be expected.

Mōu | About you


We are seeking a consultant who will provide excellent, family centred clinical services to children and their families as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

You will therefore be expected to participate in review and improvement activities, as well as the training and education of staff.


  • Applicants will hold FRACP (Neonatal/Perinatal or equivalent) and hold or be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a Specialist in Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience managing newborns with surgical and cardiac conditions.
  • Demonstrated provision of excellent, family centred clinical services to children and their families as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated participation in review and improvement activities and demonstrated ability to lead and implement education and training for medical and nursing staff.
  • Certification with the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (or equivalent) for point of care ultrasound in neonates.
