Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:


The Lead Advisor Intelligence Practice is a top-level intelligence professional and technical expert for MBIE and the New Zealand Intelligence sector.

You will be responsible for leading and driving the development of intelligence practice across the MBIE Intelligence (MI) function, including development and delivery of our Regulatory Intelligence model.


In this role, you will work with the Manager Intelligence Practice and Professional Development, in partnership with MI senior leadership, and across other MI functions.

You will need to establish and build key relationships with external and international intelligence agencies to ensure that MI's professional intelligence tradecraft and standards are developed and maintained to international levels.

You will use your broad knowledge and experience to develop structures and deliver initiatives and coordinate training that grows capability at all levels, helping to set the tone for standards and professionalism in MI.

About the Team:

The Lead Advisor Intelligence Practice works from the Intelligence Practice and Professional Development workstream, contributing across all of MI.

The IPPD Team champions MI's professional tradecraft and standards and provides leadership across MBIE on the development of our highly valued intelligence workforce and He Tāngata, our progression framework.


To support the delivery of these outcomes the IPPD strategically plans the professionalization of the intelligence workforce, ensuring current and future capability requirements are identified, developed, and planned for.

Skills and Experience Required
We're really keen to hear from you if you have:

  • Significant experience as an intelligence professional, with tenure at a very senior, principal or equivalent level.
  • Expert strategic thinking abilities to identify and deliver to professional intelligence practice needs within the context of MBIE and the wider intelligence community.
  • Proven and extensive ability to influence, lead, train, mentor and coach others to achieve outcomes.
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining an environment focused on continuous improvement to enhance organisational performance.
  • Clear concise communication skills, written and oral.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain productive relationships across a diverse stakeholder base.
  • A collaborative and actionoriented approach to issues, tasks and projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt within a dynamic environment.

The following may be an advantage:

  • A high-level tertiary qualification and adult learning certificate, or comparable relevant experience.
  • Experience with the protocols and processes required when working with protective security requirements, including highly sensitive or classified information.
  • Have experience in supporting a national security or intelligence response.
