Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

The Principal Adviser is responsible for providing high quality strategic advice and thought leadership to the Early Learning Curriculum team.

They will engage with teams across the Ministry to provide strategic advice that supports the successful design, development and implementation of Te Tiriti honouring professional learning supports for early learning services.

Mōhou ake | About you

We are looking for an experienced person who will:

  • Have a good understanding of the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and be able to articulate their understanding of mana ōrite mo te mātauranga Māori as it applies in the early learning and public sectors.
  • Have a strong understanding of Te Whāriki, the bicultural early childhood curriculum
  • Be agile
  • Be adept at handling ambiguity and complexity
  • Be a strong writer who takes pride in producing high quality work,
  • Be a skilled facilitator with credibility in the early learning sector
  • Be solutions focused, working independently and collaboratively, to achieve defined objectives.
  • Be culturally responsive
  • Have strong interpersonal skills; comfortable working with a diverse range of stakeholders


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of te ao Māori and promote tikanga and te reo Māori.

Mātau rōpū ake | About our ministry, group, and team

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.
