Āu Mahi | What You Will Do


As Director, Pacific Development you will provide leadership and advice on programs and activities which relate to the academic, cultural and professional enhancement, enrichment and achievement of Pacific learners.

You will effectively oversee and provide direction relating to student and Pacific community needs within the framework of the PAKC strategic vision.

This includes strategic advice, guidance and leadership to proactively support the strategic direction and enhancement of the University of Canterbury's relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders through the delivery of Pasifika strategies that align with the University's broader strategic plans.


Under the leadership of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific, you will oversee the Pacific Development Team (PDT) that provides extensive support, opportunities, programmes, and events for Pacific students at UC as well as some initiatives for UC staff and the wider community.


Mōu | Who You Are
You will have substantial (at least 10 years') experience in a relevant role including the following:

  • Successful track record of strategic leadership, development, business planning and budget management.
  • Possesses an indepth understanding of the issues involved in relationships between Pacific and other communities in New Zealand.
  • A high level understanding of bicultural issues and the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Demonstrable strength in lived experience of Pacific cultural values.
  • A strong directional vision for improving and enhancing the overall academic achievement and cultural experience of Pacific students.
  • Possesses an indepth understanding of the issues involved in the achievement of educational success by Pacific students.
  • A demonstrable record of forming and maintaining excellent working relationships with Pacific at all levels within the University and within external communities.
  • Excellent communication, group presentation and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to write and deliver succinct business proposals and plans.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to working in a team environment.
  • Excellent ability to inspire and engage with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong programme management skills.
  • Financial literacy to forecast and manage project budgets.
  • Effective motivational, negotiation and dispute resolution skills.
  • Ability to process information critically and articulate implications of decisions.
  • The ability to undertake research applicable to the operational services role and to implement lessons learned.
  • Postgraduate Degree (NZQA Level 8) or equivalent proven experience.
