The Assistant Director Communications Security is responsible for assisting and supporting the Director COMSEC, providing specialist input to COMSEC-related policy and guidance.


Some key responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out audit and compliance of COMSEC assurance measures for selected NZDF accounts;
  • Timely research and responses on matters for NZDF custodian enquiries, Ministry of Defence, Internal and External stakeholders;
  • Incident investigations and followup;
  • Pre & Post Audit evidence gathering and report writing;
  • Reporting on and compiling lessons learnt data, to influence and ensure NZDF COMSEC 'best practice' is maintained across a wide range of operating contexts;
  • Acting as NZDF's Client Platform Security Officer; and
  • Manage the NZDF COMSEC Incident Register.

This incredibly unique opportunity requires a specialised skillset. You will have a proven background or understanding of communications security.

The NZDF COMSEC environment can be challenging at times and you will need to be confident in your abilities to deliver advice and outputs whilst working with some tight deadlines.


You will ideally have:

  • Sound planning and organisational skills with the ability to meet key deliverables;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to forge and maintain relationships with stakeholders across NZDF and other NZDF Governmental organisations;
  • A focus on continuous improvement;
  • Understanding of policy formulation, implementation and structure with a working knowledge of technical content in the communications security field;
  • Experience in COMSEC use, accounting, user requirement and system specification;
  • An understanding of project management principles and requirements (desired); and
  • Thorough understanding of Defence Communications Equipment Management (advantageous).

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance
- most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
