Who are we? Te Aka Matua o te Ture | Law Commission is an independent Crown entity that undertakes law reform projects and provides advice to Ministers and public sector agencies.

Our role is to promote the systematic review, reform and development of the law of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Commission must take into account te ao Māori in its recommendations and consider the multicultural nature of Aotearoa New Zealand society.

The role

We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our team as General Counsel. This is a newly created role which will likely develop and adapt to the organisation's needs over time.

Reporting directly to the Board and the President (Chief Executive) your main responsibility is to support us in pursuing our strategic objectives and meeting our compliance obligations.

This position may involve managing a law clerk or legal and policy adviser as the role develops.

Key Responsibilities:

Legal and Compliance Obligations:

  • Collaborate with the General Manager to draft accountability reports, including halfyearly reports, annual reports, statements of intent and statements of performance expectations.
  • Support our ability to meet our health and safety and other compliance obligations.
  • Monitor and report to the Board on material compliance risks.
  • Provide highquality legal advice to the Board, engaging external lawyers when necessary.
  • Oversee regular reviews of our policies and prepare draft policies and procedures for Board consideration.

Governance:

  • Support the Board in achieving best practices in governance.
  • Prepare draft governance documentation, including Board induction materials and a Governance Manual, and oversee their regular review.
  • Prepare the draft annual work plan, agenda, and associated documentation for the annual Board planning meeting.
  • Provide secretariat support, including the review of agendas and draft minutes.

Future Work Programme:

  • Lead the development of highquality strategic advice to the Board on our future work programme.
  • Collaborate with the Board and General Manager to assess capacity for new projects.
  • Consult with key stakeholders, internally and externally, on the direction and content of proposed projects.

About you


Possessing an excellent law degree, you will also have recent experience in a legal and/or policy adviser position, with well-developed skills in developing and maintaining engagement relationships.

We're looking for someone who gains satisfaction from delving deeply into complex legal and social issues and working both collegially and autonomously.


The other qualities we are looking for include:

  • Substantial legal experience (10 years or more).
  • Good working knowledge of government processes, relevant government entities, legislation, and procedures.
  • Experience in the development of government policy.
  • Ability to work unsupervised is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and decisionmaking abilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • High standard of professional ethics, integrity, and reliability.
