Ko tā mātou mahi | Our Role

The Legal Counsel - Public Law is responsible for providing high quality legal advice on a wide range of matters covered by the Public Law and Litigation team, with a particular focus on public housing.

Reporting to the Associate General Counsel - Public Law and Litigation, the role will see you provide legal advice primarily in areas of public housing and dispute resolution, public law and regulatory matters.


To be successful in this role you will:
- be curious and have excellent problem solving skills,
- have good intuition on general legal principles,
- be comfortable dealing with ambiguity and giving user friendly legal advice with a fast turnaround,
- have the judgment to spot and measure risk others might not see, and to know when to escalate issues, and
- be able to build strong relationships with colleagues.


You would work in a team of about 10 other lawyers, and work closely with the Senior Legal Counsel - Public Housing.

You would be well supported within a strong culture of team work, and get to enjoy working with other talented government lawyers.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring

  • Law Degree required
  • 2+ years PQE
  • Current practicing certificate required
  • Previous legal experience either in a law firm, and/or experience as an inhouse counsel
  • Knowledge/experience in the following would be an advantage:


Public housing law
  • Residential Tenancies Act, Public and Community Housing Management Act, BORA, Human Rights Act
  • Public law framework for a Crown entity
  • Litigation/dispute resolution
  • Experience with competition law, planning law or the Urban Development Act would be useful but is not essential
