Nga Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunityWe're looking for a forward thinking and dynamic lawyer to join our Legal team as General Counsel Strategic Projects and Operations to support our business in delivering Waka Kotahi's purpose and vision.

You'll be working with legal and other experts to deliver some of the largest infrastructure projects in New Zealand, as part of New Zealand's lead regulator for land transport to deliver a safe, fair, sustainable land transport system.

You will be required to lead development and provide clear direction on strategic projects for the Legal Group aligning yourself closely to our Environment and Property, Commercial, Litigation and Regulatory teams.

Working collaboratively across our Legal team you will use your strong communication skills to build relationships with key legal users both internally and externally including other Crown Entities, Local Government and Iwi.

The work we do is varied and complex so we're looking for people who are open-minded, solutions-focused and able to think outside the box to find new and innovative ways of working.

Ko koe tēnei | About youTo be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Extensive experience advising on and managing a broad range of legal matters in the public/and or private sector. Some experience working in an inhouse environment is preferred.
  • Experience leading teams in a demanding environment
  • Demonstrated senior leadership experience with experience turning strategy into action
  • A strategic and innovative thinker, who can think beyond the issue at hand, who is curious and can think outside the box
  • An ability to provide proactive and solutionfocused advice that is simple, pragmatic and practical
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills
  • A tertiary qualification in law with ideally 15 years or more post qualification experience
  • A current New Zealand Law Society Practicing certificate


You will also demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
