Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand NZ Ministry for Primary Industries Full time

Job Title:
Regional Manager Prosecutions

Role type:
Permanent Full-time

Location:
National

Salary range:
$ 128,247 to $ 173,511 depending on skills and experience

Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

Due to promotion elsewhere, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Regional Manager Prosecutions to join and lead our highly skilled and very collegial Prosecutions Team.

The role is based in one of our Central or Southern offices (Wellington/Petone, Christchurch or Dunedin).

The Regional Manager Prosecutions leads a team of regional prosecutors, conducting prosecutions under legislation administered by MPI and the Department of Conservation.

The team is responsible for the provision of operational legal advice and prosecution services on an array of matters where non-compliance is detected.

It's a busy role with many interested stakeholders, all vying for your time You will be well supported but have the autonomy to manage your team, which is a group of brilliantly capable and (mostly) experienced senior solicitors.

Some of the key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Reviewing investigation files submitted to Legal Services
  • Conducting the Ministry's prosecutions in the regional District Courts in accordance with relevant policy and legislation
  • Working closely with the Crown Solicitor network on cases in which you are the instructing solicitor

You'll also be responsible for leading your team in such a way that it's engaged, forward looking and striving for improvement, and ensuring collaborative relationships with others at MPI are maintained and productive.

Mōu - About You

Do you care about New Zealand's natural resources and its reputation for producing sustainable, high value, food and primary products?
Do you want to be at the cutting edge of some of New Zealand's largest and most complex regulatory prosecutions?

You will have the ability to provide well-researched, contextualised and solution-focussed legal advice, with options for managing any legal risk identified.

You'll possess excellent stake-holder engagement skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in order to build and maintain effective professional working relationships with clients across MPI.

A full driving licence is essential for this role, as some travel to regional courts is required.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) Prosecutions Team conducts well over 100 prosecutions a year across the various Acts MPI administers.

Whilst the most common areas are Fisheries and Animal Welfare, it would not be unusual to also work across the Biosecurity, Forestry (climate change) Food and Wine sectors, and that's just in one day

No two days are alike in this role, and the depth and breadth of the prosecutions work is fascinating and fulfilling.

Mō te Manatū Ahu Matua - About MPI

  • We're passionate about growing prosperity in the sector while ensuring respect for Kaitiaki guardianship of our natural resources.
Ngā hua o te mahi i te Manatū Ahu Matua - Benefits of working at MPI

  • Additional MPI leave days
  • Annual Wellness payment
  • Career development and internal opportunities across the branch and organisation
Wā Mahi Ngāwari - Flexible Working
We support flexible working arrangements and are happy to discuss these options with you.

Kua rite koe mō tēnei mahi whaitake? - Are you ready to make a difference? We are committed to being a good partner under Te Tiriti o Waitangi which includes working closely with iwi, hapū, whanau and hāpori.

In your cover letter we'd like to know about you, your values, your whakapapa; your interest and motivations for this role; the abilities, strengths, personal attributes and diverse perspectives you will bring to the role and this organisation, which may have also been gained outside of the workforce.

Applications close at midnight on Tuesday 18th April 2023.
