Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi - About the Role
Responsible to the Manager Disability Services, the purpose of this position is:

  • To provide one-to-one support and guidance, designed for the individual, for up to an hour a week initially, to help students address the barriers to learning experienced as a result of their mental health and/or Autistic Spectrum condition.
  • To evaluate areas of concern, collaborating with and referring to other support services within Ara
  • Teach and support students to create weekly study timetables to help prioritise their workload and checking progress towards those priorities.
  • To work collaboratively with Ara colleagues to ensure that Ara becomes an increasingly inclusive environment in which the needs of disabled learners are consistently met.

Ngā Pūkenga Me Ngā Wheako - Skills/Experience

  • Experience, skills and understanding of relevant approaches to short term/mentoring work (e.g. building trust, maintaining confidentiality, holding boundaries, containing distress).
  • Experience and ability to build a supportive but professional relationship in order to deliver focused interventions to build confidence and motivate students to attend their timetabled sessions and undertake the independent study required to complete their programme of study
  • Skills to be able to support students to understand the social context of tertiary study which may involve talking with them about why people react the way they do in certain situations and how to manage group work.
  • The ability to work with a variety of online tools including the Internet, a customer management system and a learner record system.
  • An ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent listening, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Advocacy, problem solving and negotiation skills
