Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi - About the Role
The prime purpose of this role is to work with Māori Ākonga to identify and address key factors that will enhance their experiences at Ara so they stay engaged and are successful at Ara.
This includes helping to clarify the needs that will assist them to be successful and supporting activities delivered to enhance success.
This will include positively engaging with and responding to enquiries from Ākonga and their whānau.Responsible to the Manager Disability Services, the purpose of this position is:
- To provide information, advice and guidance to disabled Ākonga, with a particular focus on Māori and Pacific disabled Ākonga.
- To assess the support needs of disabled Ākonga and develop a plan to mitigate those needs.
- To provide information, advice and guidance to the colleagues who teach and support disabled Ākonga.
- To assist in the coordination of support for disabled Ākonga to enable them to participate fully in their studies.
- To work collaboratively with Ara colleagues to ensure that Ara becomes an increasingly inclusive environment in which the needs of disabled Ākonga are consistently met.
Ngā Pūkenga Me Ngā Wheako - Skills/Experience
- At least one year's experience of working with Disabled people in an empowering role or a willingness and aptitude to develop these skills.
- Have sound knowledge of the education sector, and in particular equity for Māori, Pacific and underserved communities.
- An understanding of the demands of a tertiary learning environment, particularly as these impacts on Māori and Pacific disabled learners
- Have working knowledge of how mātauranga Māori including te Reo, tikanga and te ao Māori can be applied to enhance positive outcomes for all.
- Competent digital literacy skills necessary to undertake all aspects of learning development delivery.
- A willingness to work with a variety of online tools including a customer management system and a Ākonga record system.
- Be willing to acquire knowledge of Assistive Supportive Technology used by disabled ākonga.
- Applicants must possess an ability to respond to learner and tutor needs in a flexible and timely manner.
- An ability to work collaboratively with others.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent listening, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Advocacy, problem solving and negotiation skills.
