Mō te tūnga | About the role

In the Advisor & Operational Support role you'll support Headquarters Defence Reserves, Youth & Sport (HQ DRYS), with outputs and activities.

This will include general office support and event management.

You'll be accountable for:

  • Supporting the directorate in Youth Development outputs and activities.
  • Daytoday monitoring, reporting systems and functions.
  • Secretariat support to councils and boards.
  • General advisory support of the directorate, including drafting of OIA and Ministerial responses as required.


You'll liaise across the NZDF with duties including monitoring and compliance of published strategy, orders, instructions, manuals and other performance measures.

You'll also liaise across various Government Departments, e.g. Ministry of Social Development and Ministry of Youth Development, with varying degrees of involvement. You'll represent NZDF at meetings and be able to identify any input that NZDF may be required to provide.

The formal title for this role within NZDF is Staff Officer Sport & Operational Support.

We're looking for an organised self-starter with experience in admin and secretarial support at an advisory level, as well as experience with event management.


Key skills and experiences you'll bring include:

  • Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills;
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills;
  • The ability to adapt your communication style for people at all levels, both internal and external to NZDF;
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills;
  • Skills in prioritising tasks to meet timeframes and effectively able to manage changing priorities, and;
  • The ability to learn, use and adapt to new information technology systems.

DRYS has a multidimensional focus with three key functional areas:
Defence Reserve Forces Policy (RESF), Youth Development (YD) and Defence Sport.
DRYS commands and delivers NZDF Youth Development programs in an All of Government and Community based environment.

Additionally, the organisation leads the development of strategic Reserve Forces policy and Employer engagement, and governs NZDF Sport on behalf of CDF.
