Our Policy Partnerships Puni works at the forefront of policy development within Te Puni Kōkiri, and we are looking for experienced Chief Advisors to join our Wellington National Office on a permanent basis.


Chief Advisors have specific responsibilities for:

  • Providing intellectual and strategic leadership, advice, and oversight to the Deputy Secretary.
  • Working in partnership with iwi, hapū and whānau Māori and state sector colleagues to achieve results.
  • Working in partnership with Puni and staff from across Te Puni Kōkiri.
  • Providing mentoring and supporting staff within Te Puni Kōkiri.


We have 4x FTE permanaent Chief Advisor oppurtunities and we are open to permanent part-time appointments as well as permanent full-time appointments.


Chief Advisors have significant influence in the strategic decisions that are made within the Office of the Secretary for Māori Development and the Policy Partnerships Puni to achieve better results for the organisation's vision of 'Thriving Whanau'.


Chief Advisors are recognised as leaders in their specific field of work and will have extensive experience across policy and strategy formation, implementation, and management.

Chief Advisors will demonstrate excellent judgement and direction in an environment that is often ambiguous and complex.

You are ambitious with a reputation for operating autonomously, considering the wider strategic value of processes and work programmes, and providing value-add insights as you lead your team to achieve success.


  • A relevant tertiary qualification, or considerable professional experience and standing.
  • Proven experience in a senior advisory role in the Public Service, preferably including experience at an executive level or through direct support to Ministers
  • Proven experience briefing Ministers on complex policy issues
  • Significant experience working with iwi, hapū and whānau Māori
  • Ability to represent the organisation at a senior level at interagency forums
  • Politically aware and comfortable working within the political context
  • Creative thinker, able to develop new approaches and solutions
  • Ability to plan, organise, monitor and deliver at a strategic level
  • An excellent understanding of the machinery of government, including experience in or working with government
  • Proven ability to lead significant projects with multidimensional teams
