  • Justify prudent asset investment that manages risk for NZ's National Grid
  • Help enable a netzero carbon future though leading Strategic Asset Integration

Investigate transmission asset performance to achieve optional outcomes and long-term strategic goals for New Zealand's National Grid.

As the Grid Owner and System Operator, Transpower's purpose is to empower New Zealand's energy future - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a safe, reliable, and secure electricity system.

About the team
Our Strategic Asset Integration Team, within the Grid Development division, is responsible for identifying and conveying our future Grid needs plus years ahead) and develops transmission asset management strategies to meet our strategic objectives as outlined in Transmission Tomorrow and Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko.

About the opportunity

Transpower is growing significantly, so in this new role we're seeking an experienced Engineer who is passionate about transmission assets (preferably HVDC, Secondary Systems and Reactive Power) to work enterprise wide, utilising exceptional relationship management and influencing skills.

With a passion for managing transmission assets with least regret decision-making, you'll get to utilise your sound technical skills and love of broader business analysis, and lead enterprise thinking which enables proactive management of risks and the ability to capitalise on investment opportunities.

Providing linkage and 'line of sight' between our Corporate and Grid Business strategies, you'll work across the business to play a key role in:

  • Determining the key differences between what is required of the Grid and what it's presently able to deliver, and carrying out investigations to enable our network strategies.
  • Leading engagement across Transpower (including with other strategic, customer, commercial, planning, engineering, and operational teams) to develop strategies and approaches to achieve our strategic objectives and enable improved delivery of the transmission service.
  • Identify opportunities and options that deliver significant longterm value, through integrated customer, system, and asset planning.
  • Representing Transpower within the external engineering community.
  • Developing asset management capability within Transpower, including working across the division with People Managers to facilitate the technical career development of others.

Your commercial focus and ability to consider and articulate across multiple dimensions including customer, technical, commercial and Grid capability, coupled with the ability to articulate benefits and trade-offs, will enable astute decision making.

You'll help to build asset management capability, inspire change, and gain a lot of executive exposure.

About you

You'll be a degree qualified Engineer with CPENG or an international equivalent with a demonstrable ability to work at pace and provide value.

Your CV and cover letter will clearly convey:

  • Strategic asset management and tactical transmission planning experience and thought leadership, including completing asset life cycle economic analysis.
  • An ability to weigh cost, system performance, risk, and environmental sustainability.
  • Outstanding communication skills both written and verbal including demonstrated ability to convey technical information to a broad range of audiences, internally and externally. Ideally, you have contributed to, or authored, thought or board papers previously (please share these with us)
  • A customer focus and astute relationship and expectation management skills when partnering with people of all levels and capabilities.
  • Previous work leading crossfunctional teams through influence and working both independently and where codesign is advantageous.

Join us at Transpower
Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. Every home, every marae, every electric vehicle, every hospital relies on the electricity we manage and deliver.
