NIWA Vessel Management Ltd (NIWA Vessels) is a subsidiary of the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

NIWA Vessels owns and operates a fleet of three research vessels out of Wellington that provide word-class environmental monitoring and research platforms.

The fleet comprises the _RV Tangaroa_, the _RV Kaharoa_ (with a replacement for the _RV Kaharoa_ due for delivery in 2024) and the coastal research vessel, _RV_ _Ikatere_.

We have an exciting opportunity for an accomplished engineering manager to join our dedicated shore-based team.

You will be responsible for the leadership of the engineering team ensuring all mechanical, electrical, and technical support deliverables are realised to a high standard for the vessels _RV Tangaroa, RV Kaharoa_ I and II.

As a senior member of the management team, you will report to the General Manager - Vessel Operations.

What we're looking for:


To be successful in this role you will be a seasoned professional, ideally coming from a marine engineering background with five years' experience of managing teams at a senior level.


As a comprehensive communicator, your ability to collaborate with the Vessel Operations Manager, Vessels Support Team, NIWA Science and IT will be a critical factor in the success of the vessels' operations and mission objectives.

Your time management skills and flexibility would be an asset for dealing with variable demands and operational disruptions.


Knowledge of IMO, MNZ, classification society standards and regulatory requirements, along with the ability to analyse and produce high quality reports, will be viewed favourably.


The ability to work outside regular weekly working hours when vessel scheduling requires the provision of engineering services on weekends or Public Holidays.


What you will bring:

  • Chief Engineer (class 1) or Tertiary Mechanical Engineering qualification
  • Knowledge of IMO, MNZ and SOLAS standards
  • Experience with ship classification society standards
  • Strong background in managing and leading teams 5+ years
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Project management experience i.e., vessel dockings, refits, new builds


The nature of the Vessels schedule requires the Engineering Manager to sometimes be available outside of regular working hours, and flexibility is essential.

Around these requirements, other flexible options (such as start and finish times) are able to be agreed and utilised.
