We are seeking a qualified and experienced specialist to join our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) school wide team in the Otago region on a full time, permanent basis.

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.

We help shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary. We do this by building relationships and understanding the needs of those who receive our services.

We are making significant changes to how we deliver our mahi by

  • Taking practical action to give effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Giving priority to regional and local voice.
  • Delivering greater responsiveness, accessibility and integrated services and support.
  • Improving feedback loops and information flows.

About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part of the Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga (South) Group in the Ministry.

We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.

The Ministry of Education is committed to inclusive practice.

We work alongside families, early childhood educators, schools and other agencies in order to make a positive difference for children and young people.


Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) initiatives help parents, whānau, teachers, early childhood centres, and schools to address behaviour, improve children's well-being, and increase educational achievement.

By strengthening relationships and creating more positive home and school environments, we remove barriers to engagement and improve students' chances to achieve at school and beyond.


Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
PB4L School Wide is a whole school approach to improving learner behaviour and achievement. School Wide Practitioners provide training and ongoing coaching to School-Wide teams set up within the school.

They work with these school teams to implement consistent and sustainable behaviour support systems that promote quality teaching and learning.


Mōhou ake | About you
- undertaken postgraduate studies in behaviour management and be an educational psychologist
- proven competence in working with teachers in schools to reduce challenging student behaviours
- confident presentation and facilitation skills with groups of educators
- demonstrated relationship management and influencing skills with the ability to build strong working relationships and effective networks with key internal and external stakeholders

Experience in Māori-medium education and fluency in te reo Māori would be an advantage. A good understanding of the links between PB4L and the Learning Support Delivery Model is also desirable.
